Celebrating the Groundbreaking and Construction Start of the Forest Theater by Forest Forward

We are excited to share the vibrant kickoff of the Forest Theater project by Forest Forward, which celebrated with a lively groundbreaking event on April 4th. Over 700 community members attended the culture-rich celebratory block party, which was also live-streamed to the public. Notable attendees included Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, State Senator Royce West, Mayor Eric Johnson, and City Councilman Adam Bazaldua, all showing strong support for this transformative initiative.

At The Projects Group, we've taken a hands-on role in driving this project forward. Our involvement ranges from strategic contractor selection to detailed project oversight and ensuring every step aligns with the vision of our client, Forest Forward, while maintaining our commitment to guiding our owners in the decision-making process. The ceremony was marked by heartfelt speeches from Elizabeth Wattley, CEO of Forest Forward, and Matrice Ellis-Kirk, Board Chair, who both highlighted the project's promising future. Additionally, the generous $1 million donation from the Perot family underscored the strong community backing for this endeavor.

Project Details:

Scope and Vision: The Forest Forward project involves a comprehensive renovation of the 75-year-old Forest Theater, set to complete by December 2025.
With a budget of $75.215 million for Phase 1, the project includes major additions including a new 66,000-square-foot arts education center, a 1,000-seat performance hall, a 200-seat studio theater, a recording studio, and a café with a rooftop lounge.
Historical and Community Focus: We're also focusing on restoring key areas like the lower-floor, mezzanine, upper balcony concessions, the box office, and the landmark marquee sign to their former glory.

This initiative underscores our focus on inclusion, with a 75% Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) spend, diligently managed by the Linbeck/Con-Real general contractor team.

In partnership with Dallas ISD, the project will transform the existing MLK Learning Center into the MLK Arts Academy, which will serve Pre-K to 8th-grade students and feature 25,000 square feet of new construction.

The Forest Forward project is a prime example of The Projects Group's dedication to fostering community growth and educational opportunities through thoughtful and impactful project management. The Center raises nearly $30 million in capital from donors across South Florida and the United States; calls on the community to join in history-making project

Boca Raton, FL – November 7, 2023 – The Center for Arts and Innovation announced today it has surpassed the City of Boca Raton’s year-one fundraising threshold. With nearly $30 million in capital commitments raised in recent months, and on the heels of the selection of world-renowned architect Renzo Piano as lead designer, The Center welcomes individuals and organizations looking to join other visionaries as the design process begins and be a part of the creation of a globally-renowned epicenter for creativity, education, innovation, and community.

“It’s thrilling to see our South Florida community support the creation of a 21st-century campus that celebrates and encourages creativity’s essential role in society while also providing a much-needed platform for innovation to flourish,” said Andrea Virgin, Chair & CEO of The Center. “We are grateful for our donors’ tremendous generosity and partnership in the creation of one of the country’s most exciting projects, led by one of the world’s greatest architects, Renzo Piano. Projected to break ground in 2025, Boca Raton’s centennial year, The Center will drive a focus on creative, economic, and innovative progress to the region, and will prioritize innovation, sustainability in design, and economic growth at its core. Offering a compelling vision that collocates artistic and cultural creation and experiences alongside multidisciplinary tech innovation, The Center will redefine what a cultural hub can be, who it can serve, and the impact it can have. By establishing itself as a pivotal space for new ideas, experiences, businesses, and innovators of tomorrow to take shape, The Center will set the stage for campuses like it in the future.

First initiated in 2018, The Center was initially conceptualized to fill a 60-mile gap in cultural infrastructure along Florida’s Gold Coast. While The Center has made tremendous progress towards its mission, its landmark placement at the north end of Mizner Park, next to the Boca Raton Museum of Art, realizes the original vision of establishing a cultural hub in Boca Raton’s downtown core, where 40 percent of the land was earmarked for such a purpose. Once operational, The Center is estimated to create more than $1.3 billion in overall economic impact in the area within its first five years, both from retained direct, indirect and induced spending and more than half a million new annual visitors to the city.

Inclusive of a $10 million dollar lead anonymous gift, The Center extends its deepest gratitude to all of its capital donors who have brought the organization to this milestone. Donors who contributed $1 million and more include James & Marta Batmasian Family Foundation; Elizabeth H. Dudley; the Kent Jordan Family; the Schmidt Family Foundation; The Edith & Martin Stein Family Foundation; and Andrea Virgin (in remembrance of Thomas J. Virgin).

Renzo Piano Tapped to Design Landmark Creative Campus in Boca Raton, Florida

A new creative campus planned for Boca Raton, Florida, dubbed The Center for Arts and Innovation, officially has an architect.

As announced today by The Center’s leadership, Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) has been selected as architect for the forthcoming project, winning out over ten top firms selected as finalists for the commission and a formidable shortlist that also included OMA, Foster + Partners, and Ennead. While the Genoa- and Paris–based studio led by 1998 Pritzker Prize laureate Renzo Piano has designed multiple high-profile museums and cultural institutions across the United States, this will be its first arts-focused project in South Florida.

“To have three Pritzker laureates in our shortlist of design architects is a testament to the global significance of this project,” said Camilo Miguel, Jr, chair of The Center’s Building Committee.

Other RPBW projects in the region include Eighty Seven Park, a luxury condo complex in Miami Beach—its first residential project in the U.S.—neighboring the site of the tragic 2021 collapse of Surfside’s Champlain Towers South. Roughly 200 miles northwest of Boca Raton on Florida’s Gulf Coast, RPBW is also designing the new Sarasota Performing Arts Center. That closely watched commission was announced earlier this year and also included Foster + Partners as a shortlisted contender.

Back in sunny Boca Raton, the second-largest city in Palm Beach County, the future Center—set to include multiple performance venues, dedicated spaces for STEAM education, and an “innovation incubator lab for entrepreneurial empowerment”—will fill what is described as a 60-mile gap of “creative infrastructure” along the northern reaches of Florida’s Gold Coast. The Center is being realized as part of a long-running (talks were first initiated in 2018) desire to erase that deficit by established a major regional arts destination outside of Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

“Culture and art are essential—they shape our society, improve our quality of life, influence our behavior in making us more human, and help us to better connect with one another,” said RPBW partner in charge Antoine Chaaya. “The programming of The Center and its architecture must play in harmony, so that the project becomes a cultural and artistic destination.”

With an anticipated groundbreaking in 2025, The Center will be constructed on the northern end of Mizner Park, an upscale dining, shopping, and entertainment district owned and managed by Brookfield Properties that first opened in the early 1990s in downtown Boca to replace an enclosed shopping mall. (Cooper Carry oversaw the splashy, pink-hued Mediterranean Revival style architecture found throughout the district in direct homage to Addison Mizner, a famed Floridian society architect and founding father-slash-designer of the city.)

In October 2022, the city formally granted The Center a 94-year ground lease at $1/year for a vacant 1.8-acre plot of land, valued at more than $30 million, located next to the Boca Raton Museum of Art. The development site, owned by the city’s Community Redevelopment Authority, also encompasses the Mizner Park Amphitheater, a popular 3,250-seat performance venue that opened in 2002 as the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater. Although details about RPBW’s larger design vision have not yet been revealed, the city has said that the existing amphitheater will be reimagined and incorporated into the new Center.

Estimated to generate more than $1.3 billion in economic impact within its first five years, Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer said that the Center will have a “ripple effect into the community and beyond that bodes well for our future.”
