The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) is a world-class research and education center dedicated to plant conservation and environmental sustainability. Located adjacent to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, the 70,000-square-foot headquarters unites scientific study, public education, and civic engagement in a landmark facility. Designed to reflect the institute’s mission, the building incorporates innovative use of green technologies—featuring a living roof with native prairie grasses, photovoltaic solar panels, geothermal wells, stormwater collection, and reclaimed materials, all integrated into a site-wide strategy to blur the boundaries between building and landscape. Home to a 1.5 million-specimen herbarium and an extensive botanical library, BRIT serves as both a global research hub and a local resource for exhibitions, public programming, and K–12 education. At the time of its completion, BRIT was one of the first LEED Platinum buildings in Texas, setting a new precedent for sustainable design in the region. More than a decade later, it remains a national model for regenerative design and a as destination for science education, public engagement, and environmental stewardship.

The Projects Group served as Owner’s Representative for the BRIT headquarters, guiding the project from early planning through completion. Our team led the selection and coordination of design, engineering, and construction partners, managed permitting and city approvals, and oversaw construction of this technically complex, sustainably driven facility. We worked closely with BRIT’s leadership, scientists, educators, and sustainability consultants to ensure that operational, research, and environmental goals were fully integrated into every design decision. TPG also facilitated campus coordination with the adjacent Fort Worth Botanic Garden, minimizing site disruption and ensuring long-term compatibility across public access, educational programming, and landscape continuity. Our oversight helped BRIT achieve its ambitious sustainability targets while delivering a resilient, high-performance facility that continues to serve as a cornerstone for plant science, research, and community education.
