The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History’s iconic OMNI Theater reopened in December 2024 as the Jane & John Justin Foundation OMNI Theater following an 18-month renovation. Originally opened in 1983 as a pioneering IMAX dome, the theater served as a rite of passage for generations of Fort Worth students and visitors—welcoming over 10 million guests. As it approached its 40-year anniversary, the museum undertook a full transformation of the space, replacing the projection system with a fully digital 8K LED dome powered by Cosm Technologies. Spanning nearly three-quarters of a sphere, the new dome envelops audiences in over 44 million pixels across nearly 12,000 precision-mounted LED panels—making it the largest of its kind in a museum setting. Additional upgrades include a new single-level, ADA-accessible lobby and improved seating for 278 guests. The revitalized theater now supports immersive educational films, private events, and flexible digital programming for a new era of engagement.
The Projects Group served as Owner’s Representative throughout the project, guiding the team through design, permitting, construction, and integration of next-generation audiovisual infrastructure. This technically complex retrofit required adapting cutting-edge technology within a decades-old structure, including millimeter-level precision to accommodate the new dome geometry and comprehensive accessibility improvements. TPG helped coordinate phasing to maintain museum operations, supported fundraising alignment during the COVID pandemic, and worked closely with museum leadership through a time of organizational transition. Today, the OMNI Theater stands as a reimagined community landmark—ready to support multi-format content, immersive learning, and expanded public use for decades to come.
