African Savanna
Fort Worth, TX
Project Type:
Institution / Zoo
Size:
~10 Acres
Completion Date:
April 2018
Opened in April 2018, the African Savanna marks the first phase of the Fort Worth Zoo’s multi-year master plan, A Wilder Vision. The 10-acre experience—including a 5-acre expansion—immerses guests in the landscapes of Africa with elevated giraffe feeding platforms, a black rhino habitat, and a 148-foot hippo river featuring an 80-foot underwater viewing window. Designed to enhance both animal welfare and guest engagement, the Savanna also includes a 10,000-square-foot event tent and shaded deck, offering a year-round venue for private and community events.
The Projects Group served as Owner’s Representative, overseeing the planning, design, and construction of this transformative first-phase expansion. TPG provided comprehensive management across all phases of development, coordinating multiple stakeholder groups, maintaining schedule and budget, and ensuring the project’s alignment with the Zoo’s long-term campus vision. The African Savanna established a new benchmark for guest immersion and animal habitat design, setting the tone for future phases of A Wilder Vision.
